Chapter 524: Chapter 524: The Family’s Disgrace is Widely Spread
Steve Price was shaking like a sieve. He had genuinely invested too much for his boss’s happiness. His words were full of honesty, much like an eunuch loyal to an ancient emperor. After speaking his mind, he closed his eyes, prepared to face any consequences.
Unexpectedly, Caleb Mamet chuckled.
A shiver ran down Steve Price’s spine. His boss’s laughter usually meant serious consequences. But Caleb gave a firm nod.
“You’re right,” he said.
“I have to make an effort. How can I let another man in my wife’s room?”
Steve Price was taken aback.
Before he could respond, Caleb stood up and left. Steve gazed at Caleb’s back in bewilderment, relieved that their boss had finally seen sense.
…
An hour later…
Xaviera Evans slowly opened her eyes. The room was dreary, with minimal light seeping through the blackout curtains, but she noticed the imposing figure of a man by her bedside.
“Caleb?” she murmured.
Caleb’s voice was hoarse as he responded, “Mmhmm.”
Xaviera reached over to switch on the bedside lamp, illuminating Caleb’s face. His eyes were dull, devoid of their usual zest.
Pangs of pain shot through her heart. “I have the curtains drawn, why did you come in?” she asked, surprised.
Xaviera knew that dim light affected Caleb’s vision. Hence, wherever he went was well-lit. Even the employees of the Lowen Clubhouse were tactful- as soon as Caleb appeared, the brightest lights would be switched on.
Concerned, Xaviera said, “You can’t see in this light. You didn’t need to come in.”
Steve Price stood at the door, excitement radiating off him. “Boss! Your wife is definitely moved right now. Won’t you say something? Even if you can’t see, you should be there for her!”
Caleb stammered, “I… I just came in, it’s fine.”
Steve Price was left speechless.
Xaviera quickly got up to pull the curtains open. Caleb closed his eyes momentarily to adjust to the brightness. When he opened them again, constricting pupils had gradually regained clarity. “Elijah Flack asked me to give you this,” he said.
Xaviera accepted a tablet from him, which was connected to the CCTV camera in the banquet hall, providing live footage of the ongoing event.
All the guests had arrived, each sitting in their designated seats. With fewer attendees, it was evident who was missing.
Once Mrs. Flack had taken her seat, her cold gaze swept across the guests and rested on the Campbell family. She smirked.
“Mr. and Mrs. Campbell, this is your first time attending the Flack family banquet, isn’t it? I heard that the Campbell family has two daughters. Where is the other one?”
All eyes turned to the Campbells. Jeremy Campbell couldn’t exactly say that Xaviera had gone to Caleb. Finally, he said helplessly, “Xaviera is young and whimsical. She probably went off somewhere. Please don’t take offense, Mrs. Flack. I’ll have her apologize to you another day.”
Mrs. Flack’s slender fingers tapped on the table. “I heard the girl is your long-lost biological daughter. Looks like Mrs. Campbell has failed to keep a close eye on her daughter. The banquet has just begun, and she is already nowhere in sight.”
Nidya Hughes’s face paled. She replied nervously, “Mrs. Flack, I really wanted to take good care of this daughter, but … she is very rebellious. She grew up in the countryside and isn’t familiar with the etiquettes of the upper class. We don’t know where she’s gone off to. Please don’t take it to heart. We’ll ensure to discipline her properly.”
Xaviera held the tablet and snorted with contempt. Any normal person would understand the need to keep the family’s disputes private, yet Mrs. Campbell disgraced her, revealing in public that her daughter was brought up in the countryside and was stubborn.
The banquet hall fell silent.
Everyone looked at the Campbell family awkwardly, and muttered among themselves, giving the Campbells strange looks.
Criticizing the Flack family’s invited guest for her rudeness, saying that she was inexperienced and stubborn at their own banquet?
Did the Campbell couple have something wrong in their minds? How dare they out and out challenge Mrs. Flack’s patience?
Mrs. Flack spoke. “Oh, I see. It’s regrettable that Miss Campbell disrespects our invitation. She runs around as she pleases at our banquet, and now that the party has started, she is nowhere to be seen.”
Nidya Hughes quickly agreed, “Mrs. Flack, you’re right. She was disrespectful. Although … she’s my biological daughter, her behavior is crass. She’s nothing like the child we raised. She’s not at all like a refined, noble lady!”
