Chapter 138: 125 126 Begin the Slaughter! The First Kill! Slay the Invaders! (Seeking monthly tickets, recommendations, and subscriptions)_1
“Any discoveries?”
“None.”
Fan Dahai frowned, while the person in charge, standing at the door, wore a faint smile and didn’t press them.
“So we…”
Just as Fan Dahai was about to call it quits and leave,
that very moment, someone in the team tapped the side of a wall, “I have another question, is there a secret compartment here?”
The person in charge’s smile instantly stiffened.
Fan Dahai turned to look.
The one who had spoken was the newbie who had just joined the team, who didn’t say anything else but stretched out his hand to the wall and gave it a tap, the sound from the hollow wall made everyone exchange glances.
“Is there really a compartment?” Fan Dahai looked back.
The person in charge managed a stiff smile, “Is there? I really didn’t know that.”
“Hmm.” Fan Dahai withdrew his gaze, and with two fingers, he poked through the wall, looking inside to the pitch-dark.
He reached out his hand.
A teammate aimed the detection device.
“Traces of poison gas.”
Almost simultaneously, Fan Dahai’s team all activated their Mech Bodies, the face shields filtering out the poison gas.
The person in charge staggered, trying to run towards the door.
Before Fan Dahai could call out to stop the man, he was stunned to find that the rookie at the end of the team had already knocked out the individual with a karate chop, laying him flat.
Silently withdrawing his gaze.
Fan Dahai organized the personnel to break open the secret compartment and start searching, and activated his communicator.
“A secret compartment has been discovered, suspected to be the source of the poison gas… My team requests the immediate sealing of the 13th Research Institute, and all personnel should be concentrated and isolated for screening…”
An hour later.
As Pei Jinye sat in the hovercar leaving the 13th Research Institute, he twisted his head to look back at the now sealed facility, worried about Brother Bi.
“How did you discover the secret compartment?” A voice came out of the blue from in front.
Pei Jinye turned around, the one asking was Fan Dahai, the leader of this mission, and the other team members were also looking over, their gazes much softer than the coldness before setting off.
Clearly, because of Pei Jinye’s earlier discovery, he had made a significant contribution to their mission’s bonus.
“When passing through the corridor, I noticed that compared to the others, this level’s hallway was narrower, so I speculated,” Pei Jinye honestly replied, his mindset not fluctuating despite everyone’s change in attitude toward him.
“Your observational skills are very good. I’ll make sure to include that in the mission report and not hide your contribution,” Fan Dahai looked at the others, “Nobody has objections, right?”
“No objections.”
“If it weren’t for little brother Pei’s discovery, probably the higher-ups would still have us continue the search. It should be a matter for the Night Patrol Department next.”
The smiles on everyone’s faces were completely genuine.
Fan Dahai sat beside Pei Jinye, “I heard you had an encounter with someone from the Old Gods Association a few days ago?”
Pei Jinye hesitated for a moment before nodding.
Fan Dahai’s smile was hard to contain, “Impressive, the rumors must be true, saying that you took on two at once.”
Someone nearby joked, “I heard the Old Gods Association members have their price, each worth one hundred to two hundred thousand; you must have made a fortune off the bonuses, right?”
“Bonuses?” Pei Jinye was startled then shook his head, “The team leader has suppressed the issue of rewards.”
“Suppressed?” Seeing his reaction, the others showed a mix of strange expressions.
Someone couldn’t help whispering, “Even if the commendation was suppressed, the headquarters would definitely issue the bonus, right?”
Fan Dahai tried to smooth things over, “Maybe the team leader is waiting to add it to the year-end bonus…”
But how credible those words were remained uncertain.
Back at the base.
Fan Dahai went to report on the mission.
Pei Jinye took the opportunity to rest, and upon finding out which hospital Brother Bi was in, was about to make his way there when Brother Kui, who was just about to drive over, took him along.
“I heard your team caught a big fish at the lab this time?” Brother Kui asked.
“Not really,” Pei Jinye shook his head, “For now, it’s only confirmed that Laboratory No. 13 has issues, but determining who’s behind and conducting experiments that endanger the Federation will require further verification.”
“This mission is pretty much wrapped up,” Brother Kui sighed lightly, “Old Niu was stuck on this for so long, that’s why he was still out in the middle of the night. Who would have thought such a thing could happen.”
“Brother Bi’s car accident…” Pei Jinye looked at Kui.
Brother Kui shook his head, “Still under investigation. The other party was driving a dump truck, said they had drunk a little, thought there were no people around at night so drove a bit fast… The person has been detained by the Night Patrol Department, and we have specialists looking into it… Hopefully, it’s just an accident.”
“Let’s hope so.”
In the hospital room.
Pei Jinye looked at the simple surroundings, with several other beds nearby, and the area filled with noise and clamor.
“Why would they put him in an environment like this?”
“The medical expenses advanced by the team couldn’t cover the cost of a VIP room at ten thousand a day,” Brother Kui sighed, “Old Niu has been on his own for years, his parents both passed away from illness a few years ago, so there’s no other family to contact. It’s just me running around helping…”
Hearing this, Pei Jinye spoke to a nurse and switched Brother Bi to a private VIP room with personal care.
“Little Pei, you…” Brother Kui stepped out to pay the medical bill and upon returning, he found out Brother Bi had been moved to a new room, a luxury room he had rarely visited, only when he saw members of the Investigation Team’s upper echelon.
“Brother Bi has helped me a lot, and this is all I can help him with,” Pei Jinye shook his head, then looked over, “What did the doctor say?”
