Not far from the crossroad was an inconspicuous car. The person inside was making a phone call.
“We didn’t do anything. He got himself into that state before we could stop him. It was God’s will. Tell Brother Bao that Ren Chong is being brought to the hospital and see what he says. We’ll head back now.”
On the other side of Chuhua at Tian Yuan Biology, Wei Ling was with someone who was currently on the phone. He betrayed no emotions, but that was what Wei Ling had come to expect from him. They had grown up together and knew each other well.
“What happened?” Wei Ling asked.
The man sitting across from him put his phone back in his pocket and said: “Bao Zi said the guy got into the accident while driving. His men didn’t do anything.”
“Is that so?” Wei Ling was curious. Even if Ren Chong was being targeted and running into all kinds of problems, he wouldn’t be unstable to the point that he couldn’t even drive properly.
“Are you sure your men didn’t do anything? No threats?”
“No.” The man said, “He’s in the hospital now and will probably have to stay there for a while. What do you plan to do?”
Wei Ling thought about it then said: “Don’t worry about it. Tell your men to back off, I’ll deal with the rest.”
The man nodded and made another short phone call before sitting down again.
“Hao Zi, about the thing I told you last time. How is it going?”
“The thing with transportation? I have already begun picking out men for the job.”
“Good. Yuan Zhiyi has been on my back lately. Apparently he had a large shipment going out soon. The samples are somewhat sensitive, so he is planning to start a transport department. It would be best we could have a list of names ready by the end of the week. He wants to start the training soon.”
The two chatted a bit more about the subject before Ye Hao checked the time. He stood up to leave.
Before he left, Ye Hao asked: “Did you guys really do all that for a cat?”
Ye Hao meant everything that had happened earlier, searching for cat traffickers and teaching professor Ren a lesson. Ye Hao couldn’t understand why all these people went to so much trouble for a cat. After all, a cat was just a cat.
What had happened was truly “the bloodbath caused by a cat”.
Wei Ling laughed. “My brother still owed that cat a favor. It is a special cat indeed. You will know when you meet it. By the way, the cat is returning to Chuhua soon.”
Ye Hao was still incredulous but left without saying anything else.
At the same time, Zheng Tan who was sitting in an SUV still had no clue as to what had happened during his time away.
When Ren Chong’s car ran into that lamp post, the car carrying him was already far from the scene. As the two cars passed each other, Zheng Tan was still thinking he didn’t know when he could get his revenge.
Fang Shaokang, on the other hand, saw what had happened. He had gotten some information on Ren Chong earlier and recognized him. He planned to do a little something to make Ren Chong’s life just a bit more difficult.
As the SUV pulled into Chuhua University, Zheng Tan forgot everything else besides the scenery in front of his eyes. He gazed transfixed at the familiar roads and building. He stood up on the chair to look outside of the window.
After over a month, the trees were fully green. He wondered what it would look like in the Eastern Quarters.
The car entered the front gate of the University. Both Fang Shaokang and the driver had no idea where the living quarters were and had to ask along the way. Zheng Tan was getting impatient. He scratched the window and Fang Shaokang lowered it. He jumped out.
The familiar environment lifted a weight off Zheng Tan. He breathed in deeply. The familiar scents in the air sent a jolt through his body. He abandoned Fang Shaokang and the car and started running.
Though he was only gone for just over a month, so much had happened that it felt like a life time. However, when he stepped foot onto the familiar roads, he knew the way immediately.
The parasol trees on either sides of the road shaded the sky. The noisy birds around the campus didn’t seem so annoying anymore.
Running past bushes, he felt light though his body was tired from the exercise.
What it feel like to long for home, Zheng Tan now knew.
In the car, the driver looked towards Fang Shaokang, who shrugged. “We’ll follow him I suppose.”
However, the cat was out of their sight already.
“Why is that cat running so fast? What’s the hurry. Let’s ask around where the Eastern Quarters is.”
The reason that they lost sight of the cat was not just because he was fast, but also because he knew a shortcut.
During his time at Chuhua University, all he did was wander outside. He knew every path like the back of his hand. In order to get home as fast as he could, he took a shortcut.
The guard was sitting in the guard house reading the newspaper. He couldn’t see Zheng Tan coming in since he was so small, so Zheng Tan jumped up and slapped him on the head.
The guard was startled after suffering a slap on the head.
He looked up just in time to see a black shadow pass by. He looked out of his window and saw the familiar figure.
“Hey! Charcoal’s back.” He chuckled and said knowing the cat couldn’t respond. There were lots of black cats like that but he could tell them apart easily. Otherwise how could he be a guard?
As the cat walked away, he sat back down and went back to reading his newspaper. He suddenly remembered there was no one home at the Jiao residence. How was the cat going to get in?
Zheng Tan ran home excitedly. He instinctively jumped up to swipe his security card. Nothing happened.
Zheng Tan then remembered he didn’t have his card with him.
F*ck! How could he get into the building without his card?
And since no one was home, how was he going to get home?
It was already 2pm and no one was coming in or out of the building. He might have to wait until dinner before people started coming home.
He wagged his tail annoyed at this new realization. He looked sideways towards Fatty’s house.
Fatty was sitting on the balcony staring at Zheng Tan curious as to why he had finally showed up after disappearing for a month.
Zheng Tan jumped onto the balcony after deciding to ask Fatty’s owner for help.
Fatty jumped up and sniffed Zheng Tan as if to make sure he was him and then he patted Zheng Tan.
Zheng Tan didn’t flinch at Fatty’s unusual greeting. He noticed during his time away, Fatty seemed to have grown larger since they last met. His bottom was huge, probably a result from squatting on instant noodles. Now his legs seemed as if they couldn’t close when he walked.
He remembered meeting Fatty for the first time last year. How things had changed.
The room smelled of food. Not the old lady’s lunch but Fatty’s cat food. The lady cooked all of Fatty’s meals. It was evident from his size that she treated him well.
When Zheng Tan entered, she had just gone into her room for a nap. The bowl on the table was still warm.
Zheng Tan didn’t enter the lady’s room immediately. Fatty looked as if he wanted to stop Zheng Tan but hesitated to do so.
Zheng Tan twitched his ears. Look at him, so scared to wake the old lady.
She was at that age where it was not that easy to fall back asleep after being woken up. He didn’t want to bother her when he had other means.
He left Fatty’s house and headed towards the Bio Building.
As for Fatty, he went back to keeping watch on the balcony like a guard dog. He was even more responsible than a dog.
The guard who was keeping an eye out all this time saw Zheng Tan walking out. He beckoned the cat over, “Come here Charcoal, I have dried fish.”
Before he could finish his sentence, Zheng Tan had left.
He took another shortcut to the Bio building, thus missing Fang Shaokang again.
After arriving at the building, Zheng Tan was suddenly slightly nervous. He hoped that Papa Jiao was in his office.
He peered inside the public lab and didn’t see Yi Xin nor Su Qu. Zheng Tan went over to the tree outside Papa Jiao’s office.
There were two people inside the office, neither of them were Papa Jiao.
Yi Xin was teaching Su Qu how to analyze data. They were huddled over the computer typing furiously while making notes on a notebook. They heard a noise at the window and both turned to look. They saw a black cat open the screen window.
“Charcoal?!” Yi Xin exclaimed.
“The boss’s cat? I thought it was lost.” Su Qu asked.
“The boss mentioned someone had found the cat and was bringing him home. I didn’t think it would be back already.”
Zheng Tan ignored their conversation. He stared at Su Qu making the latter nervous.
“Why is it staring at me?” Su Qu scratched his arm feeling goosebumps. The cat’s eyes were chilling.
“Why don’t you change a chair.” Yi Xin said.
“Oh.” Su Qu got up and pulled over a chair from the other side of the room.
After Su Qu got up, Zheng Tan jumped onto the little chair and checked the time on the computer. Papa Jiao had a class in the afternoon. He didn’t know when he would come back.
At that moment, Professor Jiao pushed open the door. He saw his cat and grinned. He just got a call from Fang Shaokang.
He rushed back after his first class though he still had two left in the afternoon.
Professor Jiao handed the books he was holding in his arms to Yi Xin. “I have two classes left. Have a go at teaching. I told them to expect you. They are waiting.”
Yi Xin was speechless. This was the second time this month.
Then Papa Jiao turned to Zheng Tan. ” Come, let’s go home. You used Mr. Fang and forgot about him didn’t you?”
