Chapter 48: Chapter 48 ‘Talent Theory
Talent is truly a mysterious thing, for the same task can seem difficult to those without talent and simple to those who possess it.
Lin Shen began to suspect that he was especially devoid of talent, he had studied very hard but somehow could never grasp the concepts taught to him by Wei Wufu.
Even though his movements were identical, Lin Shen just couldn’t sense that flow of strength within his body that Wei Wufu talked about.
“Don’t rush, keep it simple, learn.” Wei Wufu tried to teach him over and over, how to do it.
Lin Shen really wanted to tell Wei Wufu that he wasn’t in a rush, he simply couldn’t learn it.
“Old Wei, I’ve got the picture now, let’s call it a day. There’s no use hurrying something like this, you’ll just tire yourself out. Teach me slowly, and I’ll learn slowly, we have plenty of time,” Lin Shen said as he received a message that Qi Shuheng and Wang Tian’er had returned to the base and decided to stop practicing for the time being.
He had been training from morning to evening, encompassing seven or eight hours. Lin Shen remembered all the movements and theories after half a day, but for some reason, he could not put them to practical use.
Dark Bird Base was such a small place that very little could be kept secret. With a little inquiry, Lin Shen learned that the Qi and Wang families had returned with only seven people in total, plus Bai Shenfei made eight, a terribly heavy loss indeed.
However, it was said that they brought back several carloads of things, all tightly covered, with no indication of what was inside.
Lin Shen guessed that after they had broken free from Giant Mountain, they went to another place and got ahold of some things, only he did not know what they had obtained.
It wasn’t long before Bai Shenfei came to visit, and Lin Shen had her ushered into the parlor.
“Sister Bai, it seems your journey this time has been quite fruitful,” Lin Shen said as he poured tea for Bai Shenfei.
Bai Shenfei stared at Lin Shen, as if trying to discern something from his expression.
“Fruitful, no. We almost died there,” Bai Shenfei said indifferently, “I heard that you came back with Wei Wufu?”
Lin Shen nodded and replied, “After I escaped, I hid and was worried about your safety, so I didn’t leave. I waited for three days and only Wei Wufu came out. He said he got separated from you all after entering that cave and didn’t know what had become of you. We waited another half a day and still didn’t see you, Sister Bai, and I thought…”
Bai Shenfei continued to fix her gaze on Lin Shen’s eyes, as if to judge whether his words were true or false. After a while, she spoke, “Indeed, there was some trouble. If it hadn’t been for the help of a master, things would have probably been quite difficult.”
“A master? What kind of master? Does Dark Bird Base have someone stronger than you, Sister Bai?” Lin Shen asked with feigned surprise.
“Certainly someone much stronger than me.” Bai Shenfei couldn’t read anything from Lin Shen’s expression and pondered before asking, “I heard that your second brother disappeared after entering Gourd Mountain many years ago?”
“Are you suggesting the master who helped you was my second brother?” Lin Shen asked excitedly.
“I didn’t see that person’s face; it’s just speculation. Qi Shuheng and Wang Tian’er guessed that it was your fourth brother, but I don’t think so. Your fourth brother isn’t that powerful,” Bai Shenfei said lightly.
Lin Shen’s expression fell, “We thought my second brother had perished after he went missing for so many years. If it really was him, that would be incredible.”
“By the way, how was your haul?” Lin Shen asked again.
“The gains of the Qi and Wang families do not compensate for their losses, and furthermore, they suspect that the master is either your third or fourth brother, so they probably won’t dare to rashly harbor any ideas against the Lin Family in the future.”
After a pause, Bai Shenfei continued, “Now that this matter is concluded, I shall return to Sea Corn Base today. Would you like to come back with me to Sea Corn Base? I can introduce you to the training camp I’m in, the very same one Brother Lin once stayed at.”
Lin Shen truly hesitated for a moment. It wasn’t that he wanted to join any training camp, but with the departure of Bai Shenfei, he didn’t know if there would be another chance to see her, or if there would still be an opportunity to obtain the Fire Seed from her.
After musing for a long while, Lin Shen suddenly looked up at Bai Shenfei and asked, “Bai, do you currently have a boyfriend?”
Bai Shenfei was slightly taken aback, “Why do you ask that?”
“If you don’t, what do you think about me?” Lin Shen thought to himself, if he could win over Bai Shenfei, he would not only get the Fire Seed but also solve the Lin Family’s problem of lineage continuation.
“You want to be my boyfriend?” Bai Shenfei looked at Lin Shen with a bit of surprise.
“Who wouldn’t want such a beautiful girlfriend?” Although Lin Shen couldn’t see her expression, from the tone of her voice, it seemed there was a slight possibility, which somewhat surprised him.
Even though Lin Shen couldn’t see what Bai Shenfei actually looked like, judging by the way others looked at her, he knew that Bai Shenfei must be attractive. Truly, if she were to become his girlfriend, it wouldn’t be a loss.
“Unfortunately, I don’t like younger brothers,” said Bai Shenfei as she stood up, “Since you don’t want to go, I won’t force you.”
Bai Shenfei thought that Lin Shen didn’t want to go with her to Sea Corn Base, so he’d found such an excuse to tactfully reject her.
Lin Shen sighed helplessly; he knew that with such a rash question, how could Bai Shenfei possibly consider him? He would feel the same if he were her.
After escorting Bai Shenfei to the front gate and just as he was about to turn around and go back, Bai Shenfei turned her head, suddenly saying to Lin Shen, “If you really want to be my boyfriend, it’s not entirely impossible.”
“Whatever your conditions are, just say them,” Lin Shen said contemplatively.
Bai Shenfei threw an object to Lin Shen, “If you can learn this and come find me at Sea Corn Base, I might consider giving you a chance.”
After speaking, Bai Shenfei turned around and left without waiting for Lin Shen to say anything more.
“I take your words seriously, Bai,” Lin Shen caught the object to discover it was a notebook. Flipping it open, he saw that it was filled with handwritten text.
“Take it seriously.” Bai Shenfei’s voice floated back faintly, her figure already out of sight.
“Is this Base Mutation?” Lin Shen examined it closely, finding some familiar content. It appeared to be a sort of Base Mutation technique, but because there was only content and no name, he couldn’t tell what it was exactly called.
Turning to the last page, there was only the part about Base Mutation, without any content that followed.
“Suddenly giving me a Base Mutation technique, what exactly does Bai Shenfei want to do?” Lin Shen couldn’t quite grasp her intentions at the moment.
Back in his room, Lin Shen studied the technique several more times. This Base Mutation technique was even more complex than the one Wei Wufu had taught, and it seemed not to be just some ordinary technique like the five classic Base Mutation skills.
“It seems this Base Mutation technique is quite advanced. If I can master it, not only would I solve the issue of Base Mutation, but I’d also get a beautiful and strong girlfriend to continue the family line, and on top of that, obtain the Fire Seed—truly killing three birds with one stone,” thought Lin Shen, feeling somewhat excited.
However, he also knew that even if he really learned this Base Mutation technique, Bai Shenfei might not truly become his girlfriend.
He couldn’t figure out what Bai Shenfei really meant.
After Bai Shenfei left the Lin Family, she glanced back at the Lin Family’s gate from a distance and murmured to herself, “‘Talent Theory’ is not so easy to master. I wonder how many geniuses are unable to master it. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be stuck at the Base Mutation level unable to break through. I don’t know what kind of exceptional talent is needed to master ‘Talent Theory’, to become the key that unlocks the door to my destiny.”
